Whats the better one to go for? Thinking about upgrading in the new year piece by piece and i figured CPU and Mobo would be first line of call. Any recomndations to go for and not to go for? Not lookin at Clawhammers tbh, way out of my price range, cheers

AMD (Newcastle) Athlon 64 3500+ / 2.2ghz L2-512kb Cache 939pin Retail Boxed With 3 Year Warranty AMD 423 £153.32

AMD (Newcastle) Athlon 64 3800+/2.4ghz L2-512kb 939pin Boxed With 3 Year Warranty AMD 127 £357.95

I mean look at this, the 3800+ is 200 pound more expensive but same socket and cache, why so?

Because when you get up to a certain Processor point the Price for performance differance is a total ripoff. You will have to wait a little longer and the pricce of the 3800 will also come down in price radically at some point. So it is not worth buying the 3800 right now.

Buy the 3500 and save the money.

And you will not notice any significant speed differance between the two.

buy the 3500+, if you want to spend the extra money on some leet watercooling kit and there ya go, and even faster chip than the 3800+ :)

on reviews i saw for HL2, they AMD64 3200+ 939pin outperformed a P4 3.8ghz. considering the 3200+ runs at a clock speed of 2.0ghz, that's quite impressive :)

not a bad price imo, cas latency of 2 to, was lookin at some around the same price but had a cas latency of 2.5

Thats from komplett btw

After checkin out the corasiar website it only has a cas latency of 2 with intel chipsets, so when i upgrade to the new athy 64 it will be running with a latency of 2.5 is it worth getting still do you think?

Ok let the dutchman speak. I recommend the s939 3500+ WINCHESTER core for medium budget. This one is the latest revision and is also 90nm.

If you're a bit low on money get the s939 3000+ WINCHESTER core (new model) which is about 90 quid I think.

As for the memory. CL 2.5 is nice but 2-2-2-2-5 timings just give you that little extra on AMD64's cos of the integrated memory controller. If you can get 2-2-2-2-5 memory for a slightly higher price I would deffo do that cos OC'ing will prolly also mean loser timings which you cant really affort on that 2.5 mem
